The Colosseum in Rome
The Coliseum, which was built largely with the work of thousands of Jewish slaves brought to Rome by Emperor Titus after destroying the temple of Jerusalem, has certainly been an arena of death. The fauna of North Africa has been dramatically reduced by three hundred years of sport wild staged in the Coliseum, featuring animals and gladiators to satisfy the bloodlust of up to 80,000 fans in the public. However, our guide showed Elizabeth that there is no historical evidence for the fascinating stories of early Christians thrown to lions in the Colosseum. Historians now believe that these stories were invented to glamorize the plight of early Christians to the Romans. Despite the fact that there is no written record to be Christians martyred in the Coliseum there is a holy place for the Catholic Church and every Friday the Pope leads the stations of the Cross procession at the Colosseum to commemorate the fourteen stages of the Passion of Christ.Elizabeth also told us the fascist dictator Mussolini, despite his infamous reputation were responsible for the restoration and protection for various archaeological sites of Rome as the Colosseum. Mussolini wanted to return to Italy to its former greatness at the height of the Roman Empire, so he has substantial public funds designated for excavation and preservation of the Colosseum, the Forum, the Pantheon and other major monuments old. It features a number of rallies in the Coliseum to foster national pride and patriotism among its people Italian. Mussolini was eventually killed by Italian partisans and hanged by the feet for public viewing since it was considered a disgrace to his own nation. It’s not a hero celebrated in Italian history, but he had not led the country from 1922-1943 I would not have gone around the Colosseum.Thousands of people annually visit the Colosseum, but must be taken to balance the need for income from tourism with the need to preserve and maintain what remains of the structure. Accordingly, the Coliseum is no longer the site of the general public, but special events at the concerts are still held.
